I’ve been in a relationship with this girl for a while now. We’ve been through a lot together - opposition from family, financial woes, study pressure - you name it - and I really value and respect her. But recently, I feel like all the hurdles we’ve crossed together has changed us. Life is difficult for both of us, and we weather it together, but that’s all it feels like; weathering. We’re no longer in that space where just being together was fun and thrilling. I know that she’s expecting our relationship to move towards a more solid commitment soon, and after everything, she deserves that much from me, but there’s a part of me that doesn’t want to commit to a future when the present is so prosaic. How do I do right by the both of us?

One campaigns in poetry but governs in prose. Your relationship is a campaign, and it is prose right now. Can anything more come of it in the future? Perhaps poetry is merely a foreshadowing of doomed love, while the dullness you feel in your heart is the unremarkable foreshadowing of a safe road ahead. If that sounds unbearable, it is time to roll the die again.

My mother had these hideous matching red and white panjabis made for my father and me, which she wants us to wear for Pohela Boishakh. I’ll never live down the jokes from my friends if I do, and I’ll hurt the old girl if I don’t. Help!
