At least six people were killed and seven others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a human haulier on the Dhaka-Barisal Highway in Kashipur area, Barisal yesterday morning.
Passengers of the human haulier locally known as Mahendra told the Dhaka Tribune that the vehicle carrying 10 passengers was going to Barisal town from Rahmatpur, Babuganj upazila.
Md Sazzad Hossain, who was injured in the accident, said: “To avoid a collision with a motorcycle the Mahendar overtook a bus, then it fell in front of the watermelon-laden truck and a head-on collision took place between them around 9am.”
Six people – Swapan Das, driver of the Mahendra, and five passengers of the human haulier – Lovlu Begum, Mamunur Rashid Ridoy, Maleka Begum, Sohrab Hossain Hawladar and Altaf Hossain – died on the spot, he said.
Sub-Inspector of Airport police station Prodip Chandra said following the accident road communication on the highway was disrupted for about an-hour.
“Vehicular movement became normal after the damaged vehicles were removed from the spot with the help of firefighters,” he said.
The truck was seized, but the driver and helpers of it managed to flee from the spot, he added.
The injured passengers – Mamtaz Mousumi Begum, Russel Hawladar, Fulbanu Begum, Mukta Aktar, Amirunnesa, Mosammat Jannat Begum and Md Sazzad Hossain – were admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in critical conditions.
The bodies were taken to SBMCH morgue for autopsy. A case was filed in this connection.
