The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has promoted 51 of its official to the ranks of additional commissioner, joint commissioner, and deputy commissioner under Custom and Value Added Tax (VAT) offices.

The NBR, through three separate orders signed by its Second Secretary Md Shamsuddin on April 9 made the decision with immediate effect.

As many as 17 official of the rank of joint commissioner were promoted to rank of additional commissioner, 10 officials of the rank of deputy commissioner were made joint commissioners while 24 officials of the rank of assistant commissioner were promoted to the rank of deputy commissioner.

The NBR took the decision within four days after the wholesale promotion of 873 bureaucrats on April 6.

On April 4 and 5, the tax body reshuffled duties of 40 officials under customs and VAT wing, including promotion of an additional commissioner to the post of commissioner.

NBR officials said that the tax body is making changes in duties of its officials to bring administrative dynamism and achieve the revenue target set for the current fiscal year.

The NBR is assigned to collect Tk1,49,720 crore as revenue in the current fiscal year.

However, in the first seven months of ongoing fiscal, the tax authority has collected Tk79,978.72 crore against the target of Tk82,946 crore.

Income tax and VAT wing of NBR witnessed shortfalls in this duration, mainly due to the ongoing political turmoil.

NBR officials in administration said that there might be more reshuffle at revenue administration very soon.

In this regard, NBR Chairman Nojibur Rahman said efforts are on to maximize the revenue collection and improve stakeholders’ relations.
