Nor’wester lashes 3 districts

Nor’wester coupled with rain swept over Kushtia, Sylhet and Jhenaidah yesterday and killed three people.

In Kushtia, two people – Neherunnesa,50, wife of Sohrab Fakir, a resident of Baghdanga village and Ramela Khatun, 70, a resident of Dargapara village of Sadar upazila – died as roofs of their thatched houses fell on them.

Locals said Neherunnesa died as a tin sheet of her house fell collapsed over her amid the hailstorm in Sadar upazila around 3:30 am.

On the other hand, Ramela died from fear during the hailstorm around 4am, according to local people.

Besides, many houses were damaged and trees and electric poles uprooted by the storm.

In Sylhet, a farmer was killed in a lighting strike in Gowainghat upazila.

The deceased was identified as Motaher Hossain, 45, resident of the Bogaiya Hawor village of the area.

In Jhenaidah, a nor’wester swept over 35 villages in Shailakupa upazila early yesterday, leaving at least 20 people injured and damaging 500 houses and 5,000 birds of different species.

The affected villages include under Tribeni, Mirzapur, Diknagar, Kacherkol, Sarutia, Hakimpur, Monohorpur, Basontopur, Katlagari, Boalia, Ratonpur, Moukori and Shailakupa pourashabha. 

Of the injured, nine have taken first aid from different clinics while 11 have taken admission at Shailakupa Health Complex.  Abdus Salam, a farmer of Moukori village said: “Paddy on my two bighas of land have been damaged.”

He added that around 5,000 birds of different species died due to inclement weather.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sandip Kumar Sarkar said the storm destroyed crops on thousands bighas of land.
