European team in town to assist burn victims

Update : 04 Apr 2015, 07:08 PM

A joint medical team comprising plastic surgeons from Germany, Hungary and the Netherlands arrived in Dhaka yesterday to treat burn victims at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for free.

They started treating patients at DMCH’s burn and plastic surgery institute in the evening. Most of the patients here were injured during the recent political violence.

“The team will mainly focus on patients who were injured in attacks during street violence. They may treat 100-150 patients during their seven-day stay in Bangladesh,” Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad, project director of the institute, told reporters in the city.

The 10-member team is expert in plastic surgery. They came to Bangladesh under the banner of “Interplast Germany, Hungary and the Netherlands.”

A volunteer group, For Bangladesh, has organised the treatment facilities.

For Bangladesh President Hasnat Mia said they felt that they needed to do something about the patients who have been suffering in the hospital. Most of the team members visited Bangladesh earlier too.

Prof Azad said the team would also share their experience with the physicians in Bangladesh.

“So far, 183 people took treatment at the burn institute since the recent spate of violence begun in early January. Of them, 22 died and currently 22 others are under treatment,” Prof Dr Samanta Lal Sen, an adviser of the institute, said.
