Buriganga trawler capsize: Death toll reaches 16

Five more bodies including one of a boy have been recovered on the third day of a trawler capsize in the Buriganga River. With the recovery the death toll now stands at 16.

The recovered bodies were identified as Habib, 12, Abdus Samad, 35, Kajol, 25, Jhontu, 25, and Jalil Miah,55. All were from Lalbagh of the capital.

Officer-in-Charge of South Keraniganj police station Jamal Uddin Mir said the divers’ team of fire service recovered the five bodies from the river between 7am and 9am yesterday.

Earlier, eight people drowned when a trawler on the Buriganga river sank with 50 to 60 passengers on board after colliding with a cargo vessel near West Pangaon in Keraniganj on Thursday at noon. Later on Friday last three more bodies were recovered by the rescue team.

The victims were returning home after attending an Urs – a religious gathering – of Hazrat Solaiman Shah (R) at Beltoli in Matlab of Chandpur.
