Update : 04 Apr 2015, 06:18 PM

A star-studded Bangladesh Navy will take on Bangladesh Army in the first semi-final of the ATN Bangla Gold Cup National Hockey at Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium at 1pm tomorrow.

The gold cup was provided by sponsors ATN Bangla and it consists of around 10 ounces of gold. ATN Bangla has signed a five-year agreement to sponsor the tournament.

Navy will be led by national stars Russel Mahmud Jimmy, Mamunur Rahman Chayan and Krishna Kumar while Army have two national stars of their own – Sabbir Rana and Milon. Navy have stormed through to the last four courtesy several facile victories but Army, with their hard-working effort, will be looking to end the Navy juggernaut.

In the second semi-final, traditional rivals Dhaka and Faridpur will face each other at the same venue tomorrow. The champions will receive a replica of the trophy and Tk50,000 while the runners-up side will pocket Tk30,000.

In a press conference held at the hockey stadium yesterday, acting Bangladesh Hockey Federation general secretary Kazi Moinuzzaman said the tournament will contribute towards the development of the sport. “With the sponsors assured for the next four seasons, we hope the tournament will produce new players,” said Moinuzzaman.

ATN Bangla adviser Nawajish Ali Khan, tournament secretary Zafrul Ahsan and federation executive committee member Abu Jafar Tapan were also present on the occasion.
