The mother-daughter duo who sustained severe injuries in a septic tank fire in Mirer Maidan area of Sylhet on Friday died today.
Monwara Begum, 45, and her daughter Jahida Akter, 20, died at 6pm at Dhaka Medical College Burn Unit, Syed Afsan Jamil, son of Monwara Begum told the Dhaka Tribune. Jahida was a honours first year student of Political Science at Moyeen Uddin Adarsha Mohila College in Sylhet.
Jamil said his brother Jahir Hossain, 14, also sustained injuries but he was out of danger now.
Jabed Hossain Md Tarek, senior station officer of Sylhet Fire Service, said the fire broke out at the toilet of their house around 11:10pm on Friday when Monwara entered there with a candle light as there was no electricity at that time.
Later, her daughter and son also received burn injuries as they tried to rescue her, the fire official said.
He said the fire might have originated from the toxic gas from septic tank.
The injured were taken to Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet.
Later, Monwara and Jahida, who received burns to 60% of their bodies, were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Locals managed to bring the fire under control before the arrival of the fire firefighting unit.
The fire gutted valuables and furniture of the house.
