UP member shot dead in Narsingdi

A union parishad (UP) member has been shot to death in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi that sparked anger among the locals.

Superintendent of Narsingdi police Amena Begum confirmed the death.

The protest against the killing resulted in injured of seven people from blank shots by the police and baton charged on them.

The incident occurred when Ariful Hossain Pathan, 45, a UP member of Puthiya union under the upazila, shot to death at Baroitala area on Dhaka-Sylhet highway near Tharmex group of the area.

Locals said a gang of six to seven miscreants riding on bike suddenly fired arms on Ariful around 12pm on Monday and fled from the scene quickly.

Ariful received bullet-hit at his head and was rushed to the Narsindi General Hospital where on duty doctor declared him dead, they added.

Hearing the death, the agitated locals blocked the highway that caused a two hour long traffic from 1pm to 3 pm, they said.

Later police fired blank shots and charged baton on them to resume the transport movement on the highway, locals said.

“At least seven got injured; five of them were rubber bullet injured,” locals said.

The injured were rushed to Narsingdi General Hospital. Later, six of them were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, they added.

The motive behind the murder could be ascertained after investigation, the police official said, adding police were trying to arrest the criminals.
