Forest bandit killed in 'gunfight'

A suspected forest bandit has been killed in a “gunfight” with police at Jhopjhapia canal in Sundarbans under Koyra upazila of Khulna district.

The deceased is Al Amin, ringleader of a forest bandit group.

Khulna Police Super Md Habibur Rahman said: “Amin was detained from Amadi Bridge area around 7am Sunday. He confessed about being a forest bandit.”

"Acting upon the information given by Amin, police went to recover arms from Jhopjhapia canal along with the detainee around 9pm,” he said.

The SP said Amin's associates opened fire targeting the law enforcers when they reached the spot.

In retaliation, police fired back that triggered a “gunfight.”

Later, Amin was found bullet wounded at the spot while the others fled the scene.

The police officials said duty doctor declared Amin dead when when taken to Joygit Mohol Hospital at night.

Police recovered seven firearms and 141 rounds of ammunition from the spot after the gunfight.

Meanwhile, SI Hafiz, constables Raju, Harun and Akramul were injured in the incident.
