Manna, Kabari collect nomination form

Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, now in jail, and former Awami League lawmaker Sarah Begum Kabari have collected the nomination forms to join the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral race.

Central Representative of Nagarik Oikya Arifur Rahman collected the form on behalf of the detained politician from the returning office of Dhaka North on Tuesday while Sahidul Islam, personal secretary of the film actress collected the nomination form on behalf of Kabari.

On Monday, the famous film actress told the Dhaka Tribune that she has already bought the nomination paper. She said she would fight as an independent candidate since the party had not endorsed her.

Contacted for her comment over the issue, Kabari said: “I have asked my secretary to collect it yesterday. But, he could not manage to bought it on Monday. We collected it today [Tuesday].”

While talking over Manna's participation in the polls, Sahidullah Kaisar, convener of Nagarik Oikya told the journalists: “The form will be sent to Mahmudur in jail through his lawyer and the form will be submitted accordingly.”

Manna was arrested on February 24, a day after the leak of his controversial telephone conversations where Manna was heard talking to Khoka about strengthening the anti-government movement.

Later, he was placed on ten-day remand twice in two separate cases.

On March 10, Manna complained of chest pains while the second spell of his 10-day remand was underway and was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

Later, he was again sent to Dhaka Central Jail after his health condition improved.

Other mayoral aspirants Ekhlas Uddin Mollah, Taiful Siraz and Naim Hasan also collected nomination forms on Tuesday.

A total 18 mayoral aspirant, 86 reserved women councilor candidates and 434 councilor aspirant collected nomination forms from Dhaka North Returning Office till Tuesday.
