PHP to manufacture car for the first time in Bangladesh

Update : 20 Mar 2015, 06:43 PM

PHP, a business conglomerate based in Chittagong, is going to manufacture sedan car, aiming to release them in the market by the beginning of next year.

The company signed a deal with Malaysian automobile manufacturer Proton in this regard on Thursday, at  Proton Centre for Excellent Complex in Malaysian city Selangor.

PHP is going to set up the industry – the first of its kind in the country – on 30 acres of land in Anwara upazila, with a capacity of manufacturing 1,200 cars per year. The company is investing around Tk400 crore in the project, which will employ several hundreds of workers, including 50 engineers.

The cars, to be named Proton PHP, will be cheaper than Toyota reconditioned cars available in Bangladesh, said Proton CEO Dato Abdul Harith Abdullah.

However, he said Proton assembles all its vehicles strictly following the international standards, and it would ensure PHP maintained all standards of motor manufacturing.

PHP Vice-Chairman Mohammad Mohasin Chowdhury said the company would bear all repair expenses if the vehicle faced any technical problem within 25,000km of Proton PHP run.

“The company will assure all repair services within 24 hours of reported problem,” he said.

Proton began its journey as Proton Saga in Malaysia in 1985. The company sold 13,000 cars of this brand in that year locally, and 83,000 the following year. Proton is now manufacturing cars for different countries, including the Middle East and Australia.
