The unexpected road accidents have claimed 2,067 lives on various points of the highways across the country in 2014.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told this in the Jatiya Sangsad, while replying to a question from treasury bench member Shamsul Haque Chowdhury on Monday, reports BSS.
He said 2,027 road accidents were reported on the basis of the First Information Report (FIR) on several roads and highways across the country that took 2,067 lives and injured 1,535 others in 2014.
Accident Research Institute (ARI) under Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Road Transport and Highways Division identified 227 accident-prone places (Black Spot), Quader said.
He said the government has taken up a Tk165 crore project to repair as many as 144 accident-prone spots on the highways to ensure safe journey of people across the country.
The project titled Improvement of Road Safety at Black Spots on National Highways, which was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on October 14, 2014, the minister told the House.
He informed that the government undertook the project to prevent road accidents across the country with safe journey.
