FBI team visits Avijit murder spot

Update : 06 Mar 2015, 08:26 AM

Officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation have visited the spot where scientist and blogger Avijit Roy was murdered.

The four-member FBI team went to TSC of Dhaka University around 1:30pm on Friday and inspected the spot.

They also visited Bangla Academy and Suhraward Udyan where the Ekushey Book Fair took place and the places where Avijit used to visit during the fair.

Krishna Pada Roy, deputy commissioner of DB police who was accompanying the FBI representatives, said: "The team has come here to provide us technical support in investigating the murder of Avijit. We will make it public if there is any progress in the investigation."

He, however, declined to elaborate further.

The team led by Jagdeep Singh Khangura arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday night. They met DB officials on Thursday and obtained information about the evidence collected from the crime scene and the seizure list.

Avijit and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya, both US citizens, came under attack on the night of February 26 at the TSC roundabout on Dhaka University campus. Avijit succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital some hours after the attack. The couple came to Dhaka on February 16.

Bonya, who was critically injured, was flown to the US on Monday. On that day, the FBI representative in Dhaka and the police met with her at Square Hospital.

The FBI team arrived in Bangladesh after the government responded positively to an offer of the US government to engage the intelligence agency in the case.
