Prices of onions, which is now being sold at Tk55 per kilogram in the retail market, will come down in two to three days' time with the arrival of the new harvest, said a senior official.
“As the new harvest (of onions) is about to reach the market, the prices will drop in two to three days,” Senior Commerce Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, NDC, told Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
Besides, an inter-ministerial meeting at the commerce ministry recently decided to strengthen monitoring of the retail market to contain the unusually high price of the vegetable compared to the wholesale market.
The meeting has asked the National Consumer Rights Protection Bureau for closer monitoring as the retailers are charging as much as Tk55 for a kilogram of onions, though the wholesale price is Tk28.
As per the meeting decision, teams of the Bureau can seek vouchers of sold onions from retailers, and if a huge gap between retail and wholesale prices are found, the traders concerned will be fined.
However, the Bangladesh Tariff Commission report said harvesting delays could lead to the price hike, increasing to Tk55 from Tk35 a week ago.
