Govt launches website on climate change

Update : 05 Mar 2015, 02:36 PM

The government has launched a website on climate change Thursday, aiming to establish the ultimate resource hub on the issue in the country.

The Ministry of Environment and Forest developed the web portal with the financial support of Climate Change Capacity Building and Knowledge Management project of the Asian Development Bank.

“The government took the initiative to create a common platform to accumulate the scattered knowledge on climate change,” said Kamal Uddin Ahmed, secretary in charge at the ministry, at the launching ceremony in a city hotel.

Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hussain Manju and Asian Development Bank's Country Director in Bangladesh Kazuhiko Higuchi were present at the ceremony as well.

The web portal contains different data about the climate change risk reduction measures conducted by the government and non-government organisations, Kamal said.

According to the fifth assessment report of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Bangladesh is at specific risk from climate change due to its exposure to sea-level rise and extreme events like salinity intrusion, drought, erratic rainfall and tidal surge which will hamper the country's food as well as livelihood security.

The government formulated the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP) in 2009 as a guideline to tackle the negative impacts of global warming.
