Jamaat senior assistant secretary general Muhammad Kamaruzzaman has filed a petition seeking review of the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death sentence given to him by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) 2.
Advocate Shishir Mohammad Manir, counsel for Kamaruzzaman, filed the petition with the department concerned of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday morning, reports BSS.
The Jamaat leader sought acquittal from the charges of crimes against humanity, citing 44 grounds.
On Wednesday, five defence counsels led by advocate Tajul Islam met Kamaruzzaman at Dhaka Central Jail and told reporters they would file the petition on Thursday.
The tribunal on February 19 issued a warrant to execute the death sentence of Kamaruzzaman, a day after the release of the full text of his appeal judgment.
On November 3 of last year, the SC upheld the death penalty to Kamaruzzaman handed down by the ICT 2 for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
