Members of police in Shylhet have recently been come under attacks on several occasions by pickets during the hartals and blockade enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance.
Some police have also been injured in the attacks while patrolling in different parts of the Sylhet city.
“We are doing our duties both in days and nights relentlessly. We always remain in fear of falling victim to attacks,” a SMP official said seeking anonymity.
On February 15, a police constable was injured as some activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir attacked two vehicles of police in Seikhghat area of the city, according to sources at Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP).
Earlier on January 15, Sylhet Kotwali Model police station officer-in-charge Asaduzzaman came under attack by pickets in Nayasarak area.
The sources at SMP said they face problems to tackle the attackers due to lack of sufficient number of police forces.
The SMP, however, have written to the Police Headquarters in Dhaka requesting increase of the number of the forces in SMP.
Rahmath Ullah, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of SMP, said: “More police forces will appointed soon.
We have sent a letter to the headquarter requesting that the number of forces be increased.” “Several cases have been filed against the attackers. We trying to arrest the criminals,” he said.
