Khaleda willing to sit for dialogue

Update : 27 Feb 2015, 07:47 PM

Khaleda Zia, in a reply to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, expressed her willingness to sit for talks in order to resolve the ongoing political crisis; she also highlighted negative statements ruling party leaders have been delivering regarding a possible dialogue.

She also made a point to mention her seven-point demand she had earlier made through a press statement on January 5 this year.

A member of the BNP Standing Committee has delivered the letter to the UN, a senior BNP leader confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune last night.

On February 17, Ban had written to both Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the BNP chairperson, urging them to call an end to the violence and hold talks to resolve the crisis.

Osman Faruk, adviser to the BNP chairperson, held a meeting with UN officials, where he spoke about the current government’s stance on possible talks, BNP’s stance, and the overall political situation of the country, party insiders revealed.

Farruk subsequently issued a press release from the USA, urging the government to hold immediate elections to meet expectations of national and international quarters.

Ruling party leaders rejected the proposal, saying the government could not speak with killers.

Since then, more than 75 people have been killed, hundreds of others injured, and around a thousand vehicles vandalised in the ensuing BNP-led blockade to realise demands.
