Mad dog bites 37 in Chandpur

Update : 26 Feb 2015, 02:15 PM

At least 37 people have sustained injuries as a mad dog bit them in three villages under the sadar upazila on Thursday afternoon.

Locals said the mad dog started biting the residents of the Bishnupur, Lalpur, and Manoharkhadi villages between 1pm and 3pm.

The dog first bit a child at Bishnupur and, on its way to another village, it also bit some pedestrians, witnesses said.

When the news spread in the area, a group of 50-60 locals chased after it to catch it.

After being chased, the dog attacked at least 40-50 other people, including women and children, of the three villages.

However, after a three-hour chase, locals failed to catch the mad dog.

One of the victims, Bilkis Begum, said: “I went to a pond with my child to bathe, when suddenly, the dog bit my leg.”

Another victim, Nilufar Begum, said: “I saw it rolling on the ground in pain. I thought it had been bitten by a snake. Suddenly, though, it came out of the bushes towards me and bit me as well.”

The injured were brought to Chandpur General Hospital, where three of them were admitted in critical conditions, said Dr Belayet Hossain.

Thirty-four people have taken vaccines, said the caretaker of the hospital, Prodip Kumar Datta.

The injured were given vaccines and then released, said Dr  Nazmul Abedin.
