The sixth anniversary of the BDR carnage is being observed today across the country, in commemoration of 74 people, including 57 army officials, who were killed in the BDR (now BGB) headquarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka on February 25-26, 2009.
Top officials from the government, BGB, and army, along with relatives, will pay tribute to those killed in the BDR mutiny by placing wreaths at their graves in Banani graveyard today.
Under the organisation of the Bangladesh Army, representatives of President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan, the chiefs of three military services, the home ministry’s senior secretary, and BGB director general placed wreaths at the grave around 9am, according to a BGB statement.
The statement was issued by Muhammad Mohsin Reza, public relations officer of the paramilitary force. It also reads that a doa-mahfil will be held at Bir Uttam Fazlur Rahman Khandaker auditorium at Pilkhana BGB headquarters at 4:30pm on Thursday.
Along with the formal arrangements, special prayers will also be offered in all mosques under the BGB, and in all regions, sectors, institutions and units of BGB and its BOPs, it reads.
After the BDR mutiny in 2009, which killed 57 army officials, the force was later renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
On November 5, 2013, a Dhaka court announced death penalty to 150 soldiers of the then Bangladesh Rifles and two civilians for their involvement in the carnage. Life imprisonment was announced to 161 others.
In addition, 256 people, mostly BDR soldiers were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment ranging from 3 to 10 years while 277 accused were acquitted.
