Eight injured in crude bomb blasts, arson attacks in capital

At least eight people, including four students, received splinter and burn injuries in separate attacks in the capital yesterday.

Palash, 9, and his brother-in-law Md Nur Ali, 26, were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) burn unit while others were treated at the hospital’s casualty unit. 

Nur told the Dhaka Tribune he lives in the Madhubagh slum of Moghbazar, and works as a painter.

“I was returning home after work and Palash was with me when two crude bombs went off in front of the Moghbazar police outpost around 10:30pm,” he said.

Both Nur and Palash's hands and legs were burned in the attack.

Meanwhile, four Eden College students received splinter injuries after two crude bombs exploded in Azimpur around 8:45pm.

Lima, 19, Tania, 21, Oishi, 20, and Laboni, 19 were returning to their dorm from Central Shaheed Minar.

Mozammel Haque, inspector of DMCH police outpost, said the girls were being treated at the hospital’s casualty unit, as the splinters had hit their legs.

In the Press Club area, rickshaw puller Babul Ahmed, 48, received splinter injuries in his hands and legs after a crude bomb exploded there around 9.30pm.

Mozammel said Babul was also treated at the casualty unit.

Shahdiul Islam Shahid, 52, the joint convener of ward no 20 unit of Awami League in Dhaka, received splinter injuries in his leg after a crude bomb exploded in front of the Annex Building area at Bangabazar around 7:45pm. He was treated at DMCH and returned home.

2 burnt in Gazipur

A man and a woman were burnt when the bus they were travelling in came under an arson attack in Signboard area of Gazipur in the evening.

Sahida Yasmin, 30, daughter of Abdus Samad of Kolemshor of Gazipur, and Babul Hossain, 19, son of Nurul Islam of East Chandra area of Kaliakair, were admitted to Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College and the DMCH burn unit, respectively, after the attack.

The fire had burnt Babul’s head, face and back.

He said the bomb was hurled at the bus around 6pm.
