Kamaruzzaman to file review petition

Update : 21 Feb 2015, 06:35 PM

War criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman will file a review petition against the Appellate Division verdict which upheld the tribunal’s death penalty awarded to the Jamaat-e-Islami leader.

Kamaruzzaman’s lawyer Tajul Islam made the statement while talking to reporters after meeting the Jamaat leader at the Dhaka Central Jail yesterday morning.

The International Crimes Tribunal 2 issued a death warrant for Kamaruzzaman on Thursday, a day after the apex court released full text of its verdict given on November 3 last year.

“Kamaruzzaman believes he will be acquitted if justice is ensured. He is innocent,” Tajul said.

About the execution of the death warrant, Tajul said: “Kamaruzzaman cannot be executed even an hour before the disposal of the review petition.

“If anyone tries to contradict this statement then they are just showing their incapabilities regarding the knowledge of law or is committing the mistake purposely.”

A team of five lawyers visited Kamaruzzaman at the jail in the morning.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam after the release of the full verdict said the Appellate Division might take maximum a week to hear and dispose of the petition. “If it dismisses the review petition, Kamaruzzaman can seek presidential mercy to save his neck.”

The tribunal sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death on May 9, 2013 for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. Five out of seven charges were proved by the prosecution in the case. He appealed against the judgement after a month.
