Runa Laila received the Mirchi Music Award presented by Mirchi Radio at Nazrul Mancha in Kolkata last Wednesday.

The veteran singer received the prestigious award for her outstanding contribution to world music.

Upon receiving the award, Runa had the audience enthralled with her celestial rendition of some of her hit numbers.

Runa, who debuted on the “Zia Mohyuddin Show”-- a Karachi TV stage show—in 1972, occupies a special place in South Asian music. Born in Bangladesh when it was still East Pakistan, establishing a successful musical career in India and Pakistan too, Runa has memorable hits like “Dama dam mast qalandar” to her record.

Runa has recently lent her voice to a playback song for an upcoming Bangla feature film, “Mahua Sundari,” directed by Rowshan Ara Nipa based on a folk tale “Mymensingh Geetika.”
