Habibur Rahman from Laksham, Comilla proved that it only takes good intentions and courage to stand up for a cause.
The 55-year-old day labourer, resident of Uttar Narpati village in Laksham upazila with an ultra-poor background, was seen holding banners saying “Stop killing people with petrol bombs,” “Let’s unite to protect innocent lives” and “Love the people of Bangladesh.”
His protest was quite unique – there was no one else with him, nor was he shouting slogans when he took his stand on the Laksham bypass road yesterday afternoon. With the national flag tied around his head, Habib staged his protest by only holding up his banners.
Tipped off, when journalists approached him, Habib said: “Save us by restoring peace in this country – get our political leaders to get together and find a peaceful solution to their differences. ”
Asked why he staged the protest alone, he said: “Hearing about people dying in all those attacks, I cannot sleep at night. So I borrowed some money from my wife, made the banners and came here to make my stand.”
