A Shibir activist, also the prime accused in a Gaibandha arson case, has been killed in a ‘gunfight’ with RAB on the Gaibandha-Polashbari road in Burighor under Polashbari upazila in Gaibandha.
The deceased, Mostofa Monjil, 32, is the son of Josijul Master of Gaibandha Sadar upazila.
Gaibandha RAB 13 Assistant Director Ashraf Hossain Siddik said miscreants had hurled crude bombs and started firing at a patrol team around 5am on Tuesday, when they were returning to Gaibandha from Polashbari.
In retaliation, the RAB team fired back, which triggered a gunfight, leaving Monjil dead on the spot.
The RAB members also recovered seven petrol bombs, two firearms, and a motorbike from the scene.
The body has been sent to the Gaibandha Modern Hospital morgue, said Polash police OC Mojibur Rahman.
Gaibandha Sadar Police OC Rajiur Rahman said: “Monjil was the prime accused in the Gaibandha arson case. Eight people were killed and 23 others burnt in the attack. He was an active member of Islami Chhatra Shibir.”
