Banks asked to display transaction charges at ATM booths

Update : 16 Feb 2015, 06:04 PM

The country’s scheduled banks have been asked to display inter-bank transaction charges on visible places in all ATM booths nationwide.

This instruction came in the backdrop of confusion of clients, as there is no information in ATM booths about the charges set for inter-bank transactions by the central bank, said a Bangladesh Bank circular issued yesterday.

All banks will have to take steps to display service charges set for the clients, who use ATM booths of other banks for money withdrawal, balance inquiry, or to take mini-statements, said the circular.

Earlier in January, Bangladesh Bank had increased the inter-bank transaction charge for the banks’ clients, under the National Payment Switch of Bangladesh (NPSB), which came into effect from February 1.

Card-issuing banks are now paying Tk20 to booth owners for each transaction, but charge their clients the highest amount at Tk15.

Before issuing the instruction, clients were charged Tk10 by their banks for ATM transactions.

In March last year, Bangladesh Bank fixed the highest charge of each inter-bank ATM transaction at Tk10 for clients, while they were being charged at least Tk15.

Under pressure from the banks, Bangladesh Bank had to re-fix the charge by extending the transaction cost.
