Eight fishermen have been shot by robbers in the Bay of Bengal, 160 kilometres off Patharghata upazila in Patuakhali district.
The victims are Liton, Masud, Kabir, Nurul Islam, Khokan, Furkan, Saidul, and Litu. Liton, Masud, Kabir, and Nurul Islam are in critical condition as they sustained bullet injuries in their chests, backbones, and heads.
They were admitted to Upazila Health Complex, and later shifted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal.
The shooting took place in three fishing trawlers in the Bay at 2:30am on Monday, said Golam Mustafa Chowdhury, president of Barguna District Trawler Owners’ Association.
A Coast Guard patrol ship rushed to the spot upon being informed, Patharghata Contigent commander Habibur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.
