High Commission of Canada holds rickshaw race fundraiser

The Canadian High Commission held its third annual Rickshaw Relay in front of the Canadian High Commission building yesterday. 

The relay was organised by the staff and families of the Canadian High commission to raise funds for World Child Cancer Bangladesh and the Acid Survivors Foundation. 

In a rickshaw relay, teams of four race each other. Several Canadian citizens and High Commission staff members went to see the relay. 

His Excellency Benoit-Pierre Laramee, High Commissioner of Canada: “This is a wonderful event that supports an excellent cause. We arranged the relay to raise funds.”

On the political situation in Bangladesh, the high commissioner said: “Burning humans in the name of politics is unexpected and sorrowful.”

World Child Cancer is a UK-based non-governmental organisation, which works with the team at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) to treat children with cancer. 

And the Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF) was established in 1999 and has been relentlessly working in Bangladesh to combat acid attacks against women. AFS also raises awareness and runs prevention campaigns which have contributed to reducing the number of acid attacks in Bangladesh.

Selina Ahmed, executive director of Acid Survivors Foundation, and Dr Megan Doherty, a Canadian doctor and World Child Cancer volunteer, were in attendance.
