The cabinet has approved the formation of department of telecommunication under the post, telecommunications and ICT ministry.
The approval was given at the regular cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday afternoon.
Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan briefed the reporters and the meeting at the secretariat.
He said the department would be formed with 238 posts headed by a director general.
"The department will be helping the telecommunications ministry in policy making," said the cabinet secretary.
The department will absorb the officials of the telecommunications cadre who are now attached to the state-owned BTCL on deputation.
