Update : 06 Feb 2015, 10:18 AM

Three leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing have been killed in separate "shootouts" in Jessore, Rajshahi and Comilla.

The deceased are Shahidul Islam, ameer of Jamaat's Satkhira unit; Shahabuddin, information secretary of Shibir's Rajshahi University unit; and Shahabuddin Patowari, 28, was president of Shibir's Chouddagram upazila unit.

In Jessore, a Jamaat-e-Islami leader was killed in a “gunfight” with police, few hours after he escaped from the police custody with his aide.

Jessore Additional Police Super KM Ariful Hoque said: “Police approached a microbus in front of Khonika picnic spot on Jessore-Khulna highway sensing suspicious activities of the people in the vehicle.”

He said the people on the vehicle opened fire on the law enforcers and exploded crude bombs targeting them around 2:30am on Friday.

In retaliation, police fired back that left one of them injured.

Later, doctors declared him dead when taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital.

A leader of Chhatra Shibir's Rajshahi University unit was killed in a police “shootout’ at Shamsadir of the district, our Rajshahi correspondent reported.

Motihar OC Alamgir Hossain said: “A group of Shibir activists hurled crude bombs targeting a police van which was patrolling in Shamsadir area of Rajshahi around 1am on Friday.”

In retaliation, police opened fire that left three Shibir men injured with bullets.

Shahabuddin succumbed to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, the OC said.

Publicity Secretary of Shibir's RU unit Farhad Reza claimed that police had detained the Shibir men but denied the matter when the relatives of the activists were looking for them.

Later, they were informed about Shahabuddin's body being kept at RMCH morgue.

He also claimed that police killed Shahabuddin in a pre-planned way and named it a “shootout.”

Our Comilla correspondent reported that a Shibir leader was killed in a "shootout" with police at Lalbagh of Comilla sadar Dakkhin upazila.

Chhouddagram OC Uttam Kumar Chakrabarti said a group of criminals hurled hand bombs at a patrol team of police on Thursday night.

In retaliation, police opened fire that left Shahabuddin injured with bullet.

He was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, said the OC.
