A leader of Chhatra Shibir's Rajshahi University unit has been killed in a police “shootout’ at Shamsadir of the district.
The deceased is Shahabuddin, a masters’ student of crop science and technology department and also the information secretary of Shibir's university unit.
Motihar OC Alamgir Hossain said: “A group of Shibir activists attacked and hurled crude bombs targeting a police van which was patrolling in the area around 1am on Friday.”
In retaliation, police opened fire that left three Shibir men injured with bullets.
Shahabuddin succumbed to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, he said.
Publicity Secretary of Shibir RU Unit Farhad Reza claimed that police had detained the Shibir men but denied the matter when the relatives of the activists were looking for them.
Later, they were informed about Shahabuddin's body being kept at RMCH morgue.
He also claimed that police killed Shahabuddin in a pre-planned way and named it a “shootout.”
