Escaped criminal killed in Jessore 'gunfight'

A Jamaat-e-Islami leader has been killed in a “gunfight” with police, few hours after he escaped from the police custody with his aide.

The deceased is Shahidul Islam, ameer of Jamaat's Satkhira unit.

Jessore Additional Police Super KM Ariful Hoque said: “Police approached a microbus in front of Khonika picnic spot on Jessore-Khulna highway sensing suspicious activities of the people in the vehicle.”

He said the people on the vehicle opened fire on the law enforcers and exploded crude bombs targeting them around 2:30am on Friday.

In retaliation, police fired back that left one of them injured.

Meanwhile, Shahidul's associates fled the scene.

Later, the duty doctor declared him dead when taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital.

Sharsha Assistant Sub-Inspector Shomen Biswas identified the body as one of the criminal's who escaped from police custody.

Shahidul and Abdul Mazid fled from police custody while they were being shifted to Jessore from Sharsha on Thursday afternoon.

The ASI said: “Shahidul is a Jamaat leader and Mazid is a BNP leader. They are accused in several cases filed with Satkhira sadar and Kolaroa police stations.”
