Blockade violence kills four more

At least four people including truckers were killed and several others injured in blockade violence across the country yesterday.

Arson attacks continued unabated on the 31st day of the blockade while police from across the country apprehended a large number of alleged anarchists.

At least 76 leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat-Shibir were arrested from different places of the capital for “sabotage plan.”

DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman said all of them were arrested for planning subversive activities during the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s countrywide shutdown.

Of the deceased, two were killed in Bogra while one in Rajshahi. A police constable who was undergoing treatment in the capital died at a city hospital.

The constable was injured while trying to escape a petrol bomb and crude bomb attack on a police bus in the capital’s Matsya Bhaban area. He succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in the capital yesterday morning.

Shameem Mia, 28, died around 10:30am at the ICU of Square Hospital, confirmed GG Biswas, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police.

Our Rajshahi correspondent reported that miscreants threw petrol bombs targeting a truck in Railpukur area leaving its helper dead.

Our Bogra correspondent reported that arson attack on a betel leaf-loaded truck in Telepukur area under Sadar upazila of Dhaka-Bogra highway early yesterday claimed two lives.

They are truck driver Palash, 35, and helper Sahidul Islam, 38, of Shibganj upazila of the district.

Assistant Superintendent of Bogra police (media) Gaziur Rahman said the miscreants threw the petrol bomb at the truck around 5am yesterday when it was going to Dinajpur from Jhenaidah, reports BSS.

Shahidul died on the spot. Driver Palash and betel-leaf trader Mamun, 35, sustained burn injuries, he said.

The injured were admitted to Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where Palash succumbed to his injuries.

Our Khulna correspondent reported that saboteurs threw petrol bombs at the office of Khulna superintendent of police last night.

Sukumar Biswas, OC of Khulna Kotwali police station, said no one was injured in the attack.

Our Pabna correspondent reported that a truck was partially burnt and its driver injured following a petrol bomb attack in Ahammedpur Bridge area of Sadar upazila in the district early yesterday.

The injured was admitted to Pabna Sadar Hospital. RAB arrested a local BNP leader suspecting his involvement in the incident.

Mizanur Rahman, OC of Sadar police, said the truck carrying fertiliser came under petrol bomb attack in Nagarbari area of Pabna at dawn. 

Driver Ashraful Islam from Dostanabad of Sadar upazila was injured in the attack. He was admitted to Sadar Hospital.

Locals and a team of firefighters from Natore rushed to the spot and put out the blaze. 

A team of RAB arrested Lakshmipur-Kholabaria Union BNP Secretary Khorshedul Alam, 50, from his business centre in Ahammadpur Bazar area.

Our Naogaon correspondent reported that a clash had broken out between the Awami League and BNP-led alliance leaders at Doyel intersection in the district that left at least 10 injured.

Our Barisal correspondent reported that unidentified miscreants tried to torch the locked chamber of lawmaker Talukdar Yunus, AL lawmaker from Barisal 2, on Fakirbari Road in the city last night.

Shakhawat Hossain, Kotwali police station officer-in-charge, said police recovered a plastic bottle used for carrying inflammable liquid from the spot.

Our Gazipur correspondent reported that railway employees at the junction caught a man red-handed as he was fleeing after setting fire to a train.
