PM: Poverty rate will be slashed a further 10%

Update : 05 Feb 2015, 07:31 PM

The country’s poverty rate would be reduced a further 10% during the tenure of this current government, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.

“With our good effort, the country’s poverty rate has reduced to 24% over the last six years, and the government will continue this endeavour for the country’s betterment,” Hasina said after visiting the Finance Ministry yesterday, where she met with officials from four divisions of the ministry.

“We will cut down poverty rate to 14% by the end of this government’s tenure, while hardcore poverty rate is now 11% and that rate should also decline further in the coming years,” the prime minister expressed hopes.

Yesterday’s meeting was also attended by Finance Minister AMA Muhith, secretaries of the ministry, the Bangladesh Bank governor, heads of state-owned financial institutions and senior ministry officials.

Hasina praised Muhith’s consistent efficiency and thanked the Finance Ministry officials for their efforts in achieving the targeted GDP, reducing inflation and contributing to the socio-economic development of the country.

The premier also claimed that reducing the gap between the country’s rich and the poor had been a big achievement of the government.

On another note, she slammed the BNP for hurting the country’s economy, and said the public would retaliate against the BNP-Jamaat’s arson attacks.

“We have faced all kinds of natural calamities and we have the courage to face man-made destructions,” the prime minister said.
