CEC: Politicians to solve present crisis

Update : 04 Feb 2015, 07:39 PM

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad yesterday said politicians themselves would have to resolve the ongoing political impasse.

“Political crisis will have to be solved politically. It is their [politicians] responsibility. They will do it,” the CEC told reporters after a meeting at the NEC conference room in the capital.

“We give registration to political parties, but we do not control them...as per the constitution, we have particular jurisdiction. We cannot go beyond that,” he said.

The CEC’s comment came in reply to reporters’ query whether the Election Commission would take any initiative to hold dialogue between political parties to solve the political crisis.

“Our responsibility is to hold elections and we have to do it within legally-set time frame,” he added.

Talking about the elections to Dhaka City Corporations (DCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), the CEC said: “We will hold Chittagong City Corporation election on time.”

About the Dhaka city corporations elections, he said the EC would go for it after the LGRD ministry completes delimitation process.

This time, the EC will have to hold CCC election in between January 25 and July 25, as per the law. However, the long overdue elections to bifurcated DCC have remained pending due to complexity over boundary demarcation.

Rakibuddin also hoped that people belonging to all political parties would join the DCC and CCC elections.

The EC yesterday held the meeting with different stakeholders to discuss different features and functions of Smart National Identity cards to be introduced within a next few months.
