Punishment to police officer demanded

Update : 02 Feb 2015, 07:08 PM

Dhaka University Journalist Association (DUJA) yesterday demanded exemplary punishment to the police officer who assaulted journalist Nuzmul Huda, a DU correspondent of English daily New Age.

DUJA leaders made the demand at a human programme at the Aparajeyo Bangla on the university campus.

Earlier on Sunday night, some policemen led by Ramna Police Station Sub-Inspector Mahedi Hasan Sumon assaulted Nazmul and his friend Kayruzzaman Shuvo, a student of management department student of DU,  in the capital’s Bijoynagar intersection area following an altercation.

SI Mahedi Hasan beat up Nuzmul and his friend Suvo with rifle butts and boots and took them from Bijoynagor intersection to the police custody, the victims alleged.

Speaking at the human chain, DUJA President Masum Billah said the police officials assaulted Namul as he took photo of the policemen who were seen riding pillion on a motorbike violating law.

“We will launch tougher movement if our demand is not met soon,” he said.

DUJA General Secretary Sanaul Hoque Sany said the police forces are the last place where people seek their security. But where they will go if police torture brutally?

“We demanded exemplary punishment to officials involved in the incident within 24 hour,” he said.

Chhatra Union Central President Hasan Tareque also spoke there.

Meanwhile, various political and cultural organisations, including Chhatra Union, and students of political science department of DU also formed human chains to protest the attacks on the journalist and student.
