Complaint against Khaleda over killings in arson

A complaint has been filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia over killing at least 42 people by arson attacks during the ongoing blockade enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance. 

Four other BNP leaders -- BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Vice-Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and Khaleda's advisor Prof Emajuddin Ahmed -- were also named in the complaint.

AB Siddique, president of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, a pro-Awami league organisation, filed the complaint Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Atiqur Rahman's court.

In the complaint, the petitioner stated that at least 42 people were killed in arson attacks during BNP-led alliance blockade. 

He also urged the court to issue arrest warrant against Khaleda and four BNP leaders.

After recording the petitioner's statement, the court ordered Gulshan OC to investigate the matter and submit a probe report on March 1.

Earlier, two cases were filed the BNP chief naming her as the mastermind in the arson attacks in Dhaka and Comilla.

Hundreds of vehicles were burnt and attacked by miscreants during the ongoing non-stop blockade.

Blockade-related violence has killed at least 40 people over the last few weeks.

The BNP-led 20-party alliance has been enforcing a nationwide roads and waterways blockade since January 5, protesting BNP chief Khaleda Zia's confinement.

Khaleda Zia had been kept confined to her Gulshan party office since January 3. Later on January 12, the barricades were removed from in front of her political office.

However, she declared to continue the blockade until further announcement.
