Truck driver burnt in Jessore arson

Update : 01 Feb 2015, 03:52 AM

A truck driver has sustained burn injuries as blockade supporters set his vehicle afire in front of Natunhat Public College on Jessore-Benapole road.

Injured driver Nazimuddin, 25, was admitted to Jessore Medical College Hospital.

Nazimuddin said he was heading towards Rajbari with the rice-loaded truck when some people in Natunhat area vandalised the vehicle and set it on fire around 10pm on Saturday.

He said the blockaders also torched a car prior to his truck.

Being informed, fire service personnel rushed to the spot and doused the flame.

Hundreds of vehicles, including those belonging to law-enforcers, were burnt and attacked during the ongoing non-stop blockade.

Blockade-related violence has killed at least 40 people over the last few weeks.

The BNP-led 20-party alliance has been enforcing a nationwide roads and waterways blockade since January 5, protesting BNP chief Khaleda Zia's confinement.

Khaleda Zia had been kept confined to her Gulshan party office since January 3. Later on January 12, the barricades were removed from in front of her political office.

However, she declared to continue the blockade until further announcement.
