Chittagong Metropolitan police (CMP) has held forty people allegedly attempting to travel to Malaysia illegally by sea from a hotel in Chittagong city on Friday night.
Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali Circle) of CMP Md Shah Abdur Rouf confirmed the information to the Dhaka Tribune.
He said: “After being tipped-off, police arrested them through a drive conducted from 7:30pm to 10pm in a residential hotel named Golden Dream at Reaz Uddin Bazar area of the city.”
They gathered there to go to Malaysia by sea, he added.
They are kept in the Kotwali police station, and legal action would be taken after verification, the official said.
Earlier, a Malaysia bound trawler was capsized near Kutubdia Island in the Bay of Bengal on early Thursday.
Seven dead bodies were recovered and 43 people including six suspected traffickers were rescued from the spot.
