4 injured in Chittagong police barrack fire

At least four policemen including a sub-inspector (SI) have been injured in a fire that broke out at a storeroom of Dampara Police Lines under Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) area in the port city on Tuesday noon.

Of the injured, Constables Jahid and Nipun – were admitted into Chittagong Medical College Hospital and SI Nurul Alam of Arms Branch and Constable Nadim were admitted into Dampara Police Lines Hospital, said CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) Mohammad Shahidullah.

The policemen were injured by the flame during extinguishing the fire, said the CMP high official.

However, none of them were burnt and out of risk till filing of this report at 7:25pm.

The affected storeroom is on the ground floor of Shahid Akram Hossain Barrack while the upper stairs are used as barrack.

Soon after the incident, present policemen at the barrack came out from their rooms and started dousing the fire, said the police lines sources.

Chittagong's Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Jasim Uddin said a fire broke out at the central clothing store of CMP located at the ground floor of four-storied building named Shahid Akram Hossain Barrack at around 1:20pm and engulfed to the entire room soon.

On information, two fire fighting units from Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters at Agrabad rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after about an hour efforts, said DAD Jasim.

The fire might have been originated from the electric short circuit, he added.

CMP's Deputy Commissioner (Public Order and Management) Nihar Ranjan Hawladar said large number of jackets, shoes, police uniforms and other official clothes were gutted in the fire.

"A probe committee will be formed comprising Power Development Board, Public Works Department, Fire Service and CMP officials to probe into the incident and to estimate the losses of the fire," he said.
