The government has directed the cabinet division to take necessary administrative steps to make Mymensingh district a division.
The decision was taken at the regular cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday afternoon.
Cabinet Secretary M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan briefed reporters after the meeting at the secretariat.
The cabinet division will form an inter-ministerial committee for taking further measures to this regard.
"The committee will submit its report to National Implementation Committee for Administrative (Nicar) and then Nicar will take the final decision," said the cabinet secretary.
He said the cabinet also suggested splitting Dhaka into three divisions -- Dhaka, Mymensingh and the other one may consist of the surrounding districts of Faridpur.
In the meeting, the cabinet members also recommended to split Chittagong into two divisions.
