The ruling Awami League-led 14-party alliance will complete by this week the formation of committees in every ward and locality across the country to resist subversive acts.
The ruling alliance had decided to constitute such committees with a view to identifying the people involved in arson attacks, vandalism and sabotage during the BNP-led 20-party’s blockade and hartals and handing them over to the law enforcers.
Some committees have already been formed in Dhaka and they are working on the streets, Awami League sources said.
The ongoing arson and secret attacks perpetrated by the BNP-Jamaat men would stop as soon as the resistance committees are formed, said an AL Advisory Council member seeking anonymity. “This week is the last chance for the BNP-led alliance to shun the path of violence and sabotage.”
The leader claimed that the committees were formed to help the law enforcement agencies.
“The government has ordered drives by the joint forces as the police have been facing obstacles in tackling the criminals. Later, the alliance decided to constitute the anti-subversive act committees following a directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” a Presidium member said.
According to party sources and our district correspondents, committees with 20-25 members and led by local alliance leaders have already been formed in several upazilas of Jessore, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet, Rangpur, Bogra, Gaibandha, Sirajganj, Kushtia, Satkhira and Mymensingh.
The alliance was supposed to sit yesterday to expedite formation of the committees in the capital. But it was later cancelled.
When contacted, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif yesterday said all the committees would be constituted by this week.
Sources said several thousand BNP-Jamaat leaders and supporters have been arrested across the country in the crackdown by the joint forces – comprising police, RAB and BGB members.
