‘Shootout’ victim buried in haste, family demands the body

Update : 24 Jan 2015, 09:23 PM

Family of Solaiman Uddin Jisan, who was killed in a “shootout” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Thursday night, alleged that he was buried swiftly without their consent.

Moreover, Jisan’s body was declared as unclaimed though his family members went to receive the body.

Jisan’s mother Fatema Begum said they had dug up a grave for Jisan upon hearing his death news but police did not hand over the body to them.

Visiting Jisan’s house in Pashchim Latifpur village in Lakkhipur Sadar upazila yesterday, this correspondent found the distressed family still waiting for the body.

“Jisan’s cousin went to Comilla Medical College to bring back the body after post-mortem. But we do not know why police denied to hand over the body,” Fatema Begum said.

“Police told us the body was in the morgue but through various sources we came to know it had already been buried as unclaimed.”

She further added they had prepared a grave beside the mosque which was built by Jisan. “But police came over and forcefully filled it up. They also threatened us not to cross limit,” she said.

“Police is not allowing anyone to come to our house. But since Jisan died, some youths have been keeping an eye on us,” Jisan’s mother continued and urged the authority to hand over them the body to them.

Locals said all preparation for Jisan’s burial was done. Announcement of the Namaz-e-Janaza was also made. But police came and marred all the preparations.

When contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Chandraganj police station Mohd Humayun Kabir denied the allegation.

“Why would we refill the grave? We were there to just provide security to the family.”

He advised to talk to the SP for further queries but the SP could not be reached via phone despite several attempts.

Meanwhile, Assistant Director of the Comilla branch of Anjuman-e-Mofidul Islam Sajjad Hossain said they buried Jisan at Tikkarchar graveyard in the city on Friday night.

“We received the body on Friday after completion of autopsy at Comilla Medical College Hospital. Since no one claimed the body, we decided to bury it,” he added.

Jisan, a former Chhatra Dal leader of Lakshmipur and head of a crime gang formed after his name, was killed in the “shootout” at Daulatpur in Daudkandi upazila.

According to Sub-Inspector of Daudkandi Model police station Enamul Haque, RAB signalled Jisan, who was on his way to Lakshmipur from Dhaka on his motorcycle to stop but Jisan sped away firing two rounds at the law enforcers.

“RAB responded by shooting back and Jisan died on the spot after receiving bullets. A foreign-made firearm was recovered from him,” the SI said.

Police also claimed that Jisan was accused in 44 cases, including gun battle with police and four murders.
