A youth has been killed and his father injured during a clash between Santal tribespeople and Bangalis over a land dispute in the district's Parbatipur on Saturday.
The deceased is Sohag, 27, son of Jahurul Haque, 50, of Habibpur upazila.
Parbatipur police station Officer-in-Charge Mahmudul Hasan confirmed the death to the Dhaka Tribune.
Witnesses said the clash erupted around 10am when the Bangalis were working at a disputed crop field, leaving sohag dead on the spot and his father critically injured.
Bangalis claimed that the Santal tribespeople attacked them with bows, arrows and locally-made sharp weapons.
Locals said the Bangalis and the Santals have a long-standing (30-year) dispute over the land and a number of cases have been filed earlier in this connection.
Following the death, Bangalis attacked the houses of Santal tribespeople and set fire at 15 houses.
The local firefighting units are trying to douse the blaze, said the police. No report of injury has been filed after the arson attack.
Additional police and Border Guard Bangladesh members have been deployed in the area to avert further untoward situation, said the OC.
