Update : 23 Jan 2015, 01:46 PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Patgati Sheikh Lutfur Rahman Bridge in Tungipara of Gopalganj  through a video conference at the Gono Bhaban on Satureday.

The Roads and Highway Department of Gopalganj has taken all preparations for the inauguration of the bridge named after the prime minister's grand father, Sheikh Lutfur Rahman.

Earlier on Friday, Road Transportation and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader visited the bridge site.

With inauguration of the bridge, a new horizon will be opened up for the people in the country's south and south-western region as it will reduce around 25 kilometer highway connection between the capital and Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi and Bargona.

With cost of Tk72.65 crore, the Roads and Highway Department of Gopalganj has constructed the bridge over the Madhumati river, said sources in the Gopalganj Roads and Highway Department.

On December 23, 2000, Sheikh Hasina had laid the foundation station of the 391.491 meter long bridge to connect Pirojpur and Bagerhat district, they said.

But the BNP-Jamaat government government had stopped the construction in 2001.

After assuming the power, the Awami League led government again started the construction work in 2009.

Abul Kalam Azad, an engineer of RP Construction which constructed the bridge, said the bridge could be used for 100 years.
