The police have detained five alleged members of Dhaka University unit Islami Chhatra Shibir, an associate body of Jamaat-e-Islami, from Zahurul Haque Hall on Wednesday.
The detainees, identified as Shakhawat, Fazlur Rahman, Masum, Badrul and Ikramul, are students of different departments of the university and have been residing in the hall.
The police said being instructed by the DU authorities, the police have detained the five from the hall around 4pm on charge of being involved with Shibir politics.
According to some of the dormitory’s boarders, the hall unit BCL activists caught the five and beat them up severely.
Being informed, DU acting proctor Amzad Ali rushed in and handed them over to police.
He said: “The suspicious reply from the students compelled the police to make the detention.”
“We will investigate the matter and necessary action in this regard would be taken also as per the direction of the authorities concerned.”
The police with the help of university authorities also seized some books of the organisation from the hall.
