Muhith: No secretary for expat bank’s chairmanship

Update : 20 Jan 2015, 09:31 PM

Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said no secretary will be made chairman of any state-owned bank.

Referring to a former Expatriates Welfare Ministry secretary having been made the chairman of Expatriate and Welfare Bank earlier, Muhith in a letter said it was an exceptional case.

His letter was a reply to  Expat Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain’s request for making  Secretary Khandoker Iftikhar Haider the next chairman of the bank.

In a letter two weeks ago, Mosharraf said it would be appropriate to appoint the secretary as the Expatriates Welfare Bank chairman as it also conformed to the bank’s goal.

Sources in the Bank and Financial Institution Division said government high-ups had wanted to appoint former managing director of the bank CM Koyes Sami as its chairman.

During his tenure as the bank’s MD, the Expatriates Welfare Bank showed 97% recovery of loans; however, an investigation later revealed that the recovery rate was only 71%, according to Bangladesh Bank sources said.
