Hotshot Hunger Games twosome Jennifer Lawrence and director Francis Lawrence are in talks to reteam for “The Dive,” a romantic drama that James Cameron is producing for 20th Century Fox, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Cameron, who is producing with his Lightstorm Entertainment partners Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini as well as Barry Josephson, is a longtime diver aficionado and has been developing the project since 2002. Both Cameron and Martin Campbell had been attached to it over the years.
“The Dive” is based on the true love story of Cuban diver Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras and the French-born diver Audrey Mestre. Under his guidance and training, Mestre became a freediver who broke several world records. However, Mestre died while attempting a breath-hold dive over 500 feet. She was only 28.
J Michael Straczynski wrote the current draft. Laeta Kalogridis, who worked with Cameron on Avatar, wrote a previous draft.
It’s unclear what stage the talks are in with Jennifer Lawrence. It is known she at least has the offer to star. Whether a deal is made remains to be seen. The actress and director worked together on “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” as well as the two Mockingjay movies, the second of which opens later this year.
