Update : 16 Jan 2015, 05:19 AM

A suspected arsonist has been killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel at Kansat under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj.

The deceased is Matiur Rahman, son of Montu Ali, of Bajitpur village of the upazila.

Chapainawabganj RAB 5 Company Commander Major Kamruzzaman Pavel said: “We had detained some people, including Matiur, in a special drive on Thursday. He had confessed his involvement in many subversive activities, including arson.”

He said Matiur's associates opened fire at the law enforcers when they took him to Kansat for recovering firearms.

In retaliation, RAB officials fired back that triggered a “gunfight.” The official said Matiur died in the “gunfight” while trying to escape.

Later, the RAB recovered some crude bombs and firearms from the area.

Shibganj upazila Chhatra Dal General Secretary Abdullah Al Faruk claimed Matiur to be the assistant president of the party's Shyampur unit.
